3. Initial condition of the car

Finally long document clearance at Customs and State Revenue Office is ended and car is set off container and landed at our workshop. According to paint plate it should be painted in DB180 - i.e. Mercedes Silver Metallic colour.

Unfortunately first visual inspection shows, that quite a lot of parts and components are not present on the car. Supplied loose parts are taken out from the car and sorted as far as possible by function groups. There are no present seats and no softtop in the passenger compartment.

Broken rear brake drums and rear springs are among few of arrived parts found in the car. Rear wheels are attached to the axle directly - i.e. without brake drums installed!

Doors are pretty complete and in unrestored condition - as assembled more than 50 years ago.

Window winders have well survived through tough times, just all door handles are missing.

Unfortunately highly valued original paper air ducts are destroyed by humidity and careless attitude. Now days it is possible to find just plastic replacement of this unit.

Electrical connection plate of steering column central knob still usable, but steering wheel and signalling ring are demolished.

Wooden parts need examination by master - probably humidity has not destroyed wooden core and it will be possible to glue together separated dashboard details.

Quite a lot of metal has dropped down during dismantling.

Rear window frame of the hardtop has heavily affected by corrosion - at the bottom part there are lot of punctures sneaking through metal.

In spite of heavily rusted bottom, backbone of the car still shows will to live. Instead of broken one we installed new hood hinge to check the gaps - there is still reasonably perfect fit.

With greased door hinges also doors are showing good results - precise operation and steady gaps between remained parts and door panels. Just LHS top part of the body rear side panel seems a bit dropped inside.

Car is brought to lift for bottom inspection and running gear disassembly.

Now we can see that rear end of the car is lost - even important structural components are decomposed by rust.

Jacking points must be reconstructed totally.

Front section is not much better than rear of the car, though here still are some firm points suitable for lifting of the car.

Rear axle removed. It seems complete; just all elastic elements are outworn. Unfortunately supports of trailing arms have been separated from the body and we will have to restore those important fixing points according to factory drawings.

Front suspension opposite to the engine appears complete and not damaged

There is no any chance to save existing fuel tank.

Car has been driven with one bolt out of three in place at the propshaft joint. So now both counterparts are broken - gearbox flange and front section of propshaft must be replaced. Also gearbox rear cover seems heavily grinded by loosen bolt heads - we shall check whether it will be possible to continue use of it.
