Disassembling of the car and identification of defects

Fault detection of the body elements was performed during disassembly and decision on necessary restoration works and methods were made at the same time. Electrical installations, wiring and other components of the car were regularly photographed and marked in the course of disassembly.

Mercedes-Benz 280SE delivered to RMWDisassembly process began with removing the decorative elements, doors, engine and boot lid and assessing technical condition of these parts. All chrome-coated parts were rusted through and it was necessary to treat their surface, prepare for chrome coating and coat with a new chrome layer. The right side of the rear bumper, unfortunately, appeared too much deformed to be restored at the required quality. It was, therefore, decided to order a new one.

Despite the fact that the car did not lose completely its running ability, interior trim details and upholstery were damaged so much that it was necessary to manufacture it anew. In addition, the control panel was cracked, and some of its wooden parts needed to be made anew.

Units and parts taken from the car were sorted according to the methods of further restoration. Parts, which can not be restored and need to be replaced with new ones were gathered separately.

Windshield was removed; lifting roof, side windows and window regulators, as well as all rubber seals and elements of upholstery were dismantled showing actual extent of corrosion damage.

Continuing disassembly, all systems in the engine compartment have been disconnected - feeders and driving gear of the air conditioner and other components.

Upon dismantling power supply system of the motor, location of components and type of their connections and fixtures has been accurately documented.

Front and rear axles have been removed simultaneously detecting faults of individual components. All rubber parts of both axles (pads, pillows, sleeves) were damaged and lost their elasticity, and there needed to be replaced. Absorbers of both axles, as well as engine exhaust system were can't be repaired. Decision regarding technical condition of the front and rear axle gearbox housing parts, was made after its disassembling and cleaning - parts of the gearbox housing were in satisfactory condition, but bearings were heavily worn and needed to be replaced.

Fuel tank was removed. After it was sand blasted, it became apparent that the tank has a lot of minor damages and needed to solder the tank. Dismantling the fuel supply pipes it was discovered that they were corroded to a great extent, their qualitative restoration is not possible, and these pipes will need to be made anew.

Initially, the car's engine was removed together with the gearbox, since it is provided by factory assembly sequence. After separating gearbox from engine, disassembly and fault detection of the two units were done separately. After disassembling the engine, all technical systems and engine components as well as fuel supply and distribution system, lubrication system, cooling and ignition systems were disassembled, dismantled and faults were detected in details.

Before further disassembly and fault detection the removed units have been cleaned and washed using high pressure washing equipment and special chemicals.

For further restoration of the body, we made a conductor or supporting frame absolutely necessary for this task, thereon we put the body free from parts and units. The conductor is a mobile base for transporting the body and also saves geometry of the body during its further restoration.
