Engine repair

Mercedes-Benz 280SL engine restoration All engine ancillaries were dismantled. Engine was installed on the engine repair rig for easy repair work. Crankcase sump was removed to provide access for crankshaft and connecting rod bearing inspection. Technical condition and bearings play here was acceptable so further disassembly is not necessary.

Mercedes-Benz 280SL engine detailsWe removed cylinder head. Distribution gear was disassembled. During disassembly all components were grouped accordingly to ensure all parts are returned back in previous place after repair.

Restoration was continued totally disassembling engine.

There were traces of soot in combustion chambers and rusted areas around cooling channels on the top surface of the block. Engine block was cleaned using special chemical solution to see technical condition.

Paintwork of the external surfaces was restored.

Current batch of engine fittings was received from galvanizing shop.

Engine block was completely disassembled and sent to motor workshop for cylinder surface machining.

Engine cylinder head was completely disassembled to determine condition of all parts.

Valves were not damaged, but it was necessary to perform cleaning and grinding of packing surfaces as well as replacing of valve oil splash shields. It was necessary to grind valve seats in the engine cylinder head.

Working plane of the engine head was grinded. All valves were cleaned and valve seats as well as valve heads machined.

Assembling of motor started with installation of grinded crankshaft. We used new main bearing shells of corresponding size to fix crankshaft.

New pistons with new piston rings were attached to the connecting rods. New connecting rod bearing shells were used trimming engine block with pistons.

Oil pump and sump body were installed at the bottom of the engine block.

For installation on this engine to find correct cylinder head gasket one had to know model, modification and time of manufacturing of the engine block. Restored and grinded engine cylinder head was attached to the main block.

Camshaft was returned to the place. Valve control gear was assembled and valve clearances were adjusted accordingly to manufacturer prescriptions.

Valve cover was installed. Renovated components of fuel injection system were installed.

Components of engine cooling, lubricating and ignition systems were installed. We used new gaskets attaching oil sump and installing covers for technological openings along the side of the engine block.
