Mercedes-Benz 190SL assembly process

We began to assemble the body part components. The door rims and the doors were attached along with the windscreen frame and finally the windscreen itself. At the same time, the salon lining was put together and electrical system wires were strung together. Even though the gearbox is visible in the photo, it has simply been placed there, because along with the engine and axles, it is still awaiting its turn to be assembled.

We install a sound insulating cover in the doors and install the window winding and door mechanisms inside them.

Bumpers are fastened to the body along with other decorative chrome parts. The boot hood is also installed.

We set up the lighting devices in the rear section.

The body is still temporarily located on the specially prepared layout table which makes it easier to access and manoeuvre. We install the headlamp bases.

We await a consignment of ordered parts and we will be able to continue the assembly process.

For the time being, we treated all of the car's underside welding stitches with a special resin which will later prevent contamination by moisture and dirt.

New Mercedes-Benz 190SL tyres

We have received new tyres which are still covered by a protective cover and assemble them on the renovated wheel disks. All that remains is to attach the decorative chrome disks which will cover the wheel axes and screw positions.

The awaited consignment of spare parts has arrived. At almost the same time, we received another consignment of parts which had been previously sent off for renovation. All parts received are listed, ordered accordingly and set aside for storage until their assembly.

New Mercedes-Benz 190SL seats

We have received the seats after repair. See how elegant a newly restored seat covered with fresh leather looks. Installed in the car, they will look even better.

We installed the measuring instruments in the renovated salon front panel before the front panel is inserted into the body. This is simpler and easier and enables us to do the job better.

We attach the inner lining to the doors, but before proceeding with the installation of the veneer flooring, the salon floor must also be treated from the inside.

We install the brake system tubes followed by the fuel supply lead line.

Prior to installing the fuel tank, electric fuel level signal connection wires are wired under the floor of the boot.

We have installed the fuel tank and built the petrol level signal into it.
The packing for the hood of the boot has also been installed - we can now begin to install interior decorative fittings into the boot.

We continue to put the salon together by adding the decorative lining for the niche of the retractable roof.

After the floor has been prepared, veneer flooring is affixed in the salon at the feet of the driver and passenger.

Electrical installation wires have been installed into the engine compartment, where necessary surfaces have received additional treatment, wire connectors have been screwed on and the engine compartmenty has been prepared for the installation of the engine.

Gearbox gear wheels prepared for assembly along with cog wheels, synchronisers and other component parts.

Engine parts have also been renovated - the crankshaft, block and head have been refined. The engine head has been repaired, valves have been replaced and assembly of the engine has begun.

New pistons with rings, slide bearings and gas distribution mechanism drive chain are installed into the engine.

The gearbox housing and other components have been restored. The gearbox is being assembled - we install newly received bearings and packing rings.

11.05.2008

Just as in days of old, the floor of the Mercedes’ salon in the front and behind the seats is covered with correspondingly sawn water-resistant veneer pieces which are prepared in accordance with samples of the old panels. Prior to assembling the floor panels, the floor underneath them is treated with sound insulation material.

Renovated front panel Mercedes-Benz 190SL

Already displaying the elements of the main instrument section, the front panel is installed to precisely fit in with the leather-covered lining components to make this job easier; we end up having to remove the windscreen and windscreen frame installed earlier.

Already installed, the doors are now precisely adjusted to fit into the body column.

13.05.2008

To install the windscreen frame once again, it first has to be air-tight, concurrently installing the windscreen packing rubber, then affixed to the body and finally the glass itself is installed. Assembly of the rear chrome roof moulding is carried out.

14.- 16.05.2008

Renovated front axle Mercedes-Benz 190SL

The renovated front axle is assembled and springs and shock absorbers are inserted.

Parallel to fitting the car's body, assembly of the engine and the gearbox is completed. We put both aggregates together and install them on the front axle.

19.05.2008

Before installing the running gear and transmission, there are still a number of other jobs to be carried out which would be more difficult to do later.

06.06.2008

The rear axle is also assembled and prepared for installation.

09.06.2008

The exhaust and inlet manifolds and distributor are affixed to the engine, while the salon heating equipment cables are strung and fastened into the body. The steering wheel bar and the steering wheel itself are installed and the thermostat is assembled.

10.06.2008

Renovated MB badge 190SL

The brake fluid vessel and the fuel transmitter are screwed on, and the front turn signal lights are installed and connected. Installation of instruments continues - including installation of lamps, knobs and other fittings into the front panel.

12.06.2008

A very important moment - the rear axle and the joint front axle, engine and gearbox system are attached to the body from below. Fuel and air input tubes are attached and the battery is installed.

18.06.2008

The brake system is assembled and the power brake booster is installed and the exhaust pipe is assembled. We repair the heating furnace radiator. An air filter is installed and attached to the engine compartment.

01.07.2008

The previously assembled roof frame is affixed to the body and adjusted approximately.

Finally, mats which are the same colour as the seats are affixed to the salon.

03.07.2008

Work continues on the decoration of the salon; precise adjustment of the wooden components of the retractable roof is being carried out, while the fixation rubber of the roof section of the adjustable door glass is cut and affixed to the frame of the roof.

Renovated steering wheel of Mercedes-Benz 190SL

The steering wheel is adorned with a decorative chrome part.

Renovated Mercedes-Benz 190SL soft top

The soft top of the retractable roof is installed and the initial bleeding and regulation of the brake system is carried out.

21.07.2008

The car’s suspension and brakes are regulated on a stand and its electrical devices undergo testing.

01.08.2008

The final decorative salon fittings are installed, the seats are installed and regulation and the carburetors are subjected to initial regulation and testing. We carry out jobs requiring special apparatus - regulation of the car's lights, alignment regulation, as well as testing on a brake stand.

The car is switched and taken for a test drive to carry out various systems operational checks and to make the necessary adjustments.

The engine hood is installed and adjusted.

Unfortunately, it turns out that the radiator needs to be repaired - it doesn't survive the test drive. After its repair and the ensuing checks, we replace it in its proper position.

When the decorative fitting work is complete, the salon is restored to its former glory, as in the days of this particular Mercedes Benz's youth.

Fully renovated Mercedes-Benz 190SL

The restoration of this Mercedes Benz 190 SL which has taken approximately two and a half years is finally complete. We conduct a test of the car's technical condition at the inspection station and receive the corresponding sticker which allows it to be part of road traffic. We carry out the formal measures that ensure that the car is entitled to fully participate in any vintage car event - we carry out the necessary expert examinations and receive FIA and FIVA international certificates.
