Simca 8 Sport Cabriolet project

Simca 8 Sport Cabriolet

Such 1950 Simca 8 Sport is not often seen in Europe and needs full restoration. The rarity of the Marque may likely scare off some potential buyers, but the event eligibility and rally history make it worth a look.

These cars have many interesting design cues and have rally heritage. The stance is nicely slung over narrow steel wheels and despite being called an “8” it was originally powered by a 1221cc 4-cylinder.

The Simca 8 Cabriolet is actually a Farina with another front. SIMCA (Société Industrielle de Méchanique et de carrosserie automobile) once started as assembly company for FIAT. Battista ' Pinin'Farina, at that time working in the family business ' les Stabilimenti Farina' designed this cabriolet based on the Fiat 1100 S, a car with the same chassis as the Simca 8. The same design was used for Cisitalia and the Fiat 1100 Spider.

Simca put in a campaign to obtain a French subcontractor and find it in the person of Jean Daninos, director of FACEL. Farina granted a license to allow the installation of a production line in the plant Facel de Colombes, from light alloy elements pressed in the factories of Amboise, and the Dreux works assured the completion (painting and upholstery).

These cars had great success in the Rallye Monte Carlo during 1950 -1952 with famous formula 1 drivers like Maurice Trintignant and Jean Behra. The majority of competition cars were coupes, but a cabriolet, like this one, won the Moroccan Rally of Atlases in 1950.

The car in general, and particularly the body, is very straight and complete. The unobtainable grille, wheel cups and bumpers are intact on this example. The door handles deserve special attention, as they are similar in design to the 300SL Gullwing. The rear fenders are nicely formed and the car radiates like it is Italian. Inside the car will need major renovation, but the carcass is mostly solid. Photos of the centre gauge panel are baffling; like only the French could build. It is likely that some were sold new in the USA, so this could be one of them. Originally car had been painted dark blue metallic with red interior.
